Geoff Berner
plays the accordion, and makes no apologies. Geoff Berner
has played in a punk band. Geoff Berner has written for Sesame
Street. Geoff Berner prefers to drink scotch out of a wine
glass.
Berner’s work combines folk, punk, rock, pop, and traditional
Jewish music into an organic whole. His acerbic writing, twisted
world view and take–no–prisoners delivery combine for an experience
pleasing to punks and folkies alike. Geoff Berner is a one-off.
Fellow Canadian alt-country singer songwriter Carolyn Mark
is a similarly unique proposition. Her sound is melodically
simple, unmistakably country, coyly romantic and wonderfully
crude. This is a woman wh exudes sex with her voice but also
demands respect for her obvious talent and true blue country
heart.
One of Canada’s best-kept secrets, songstress, guitarist and
multi-instrumentalist Priya Thomas specialises in no holds
barred, kiss-my-asse mpowered pop. A suicide blonde with an
adrenalincharged stage presence, she has opened for Rufus
Wainwright, Radiohead and The Dears. Her new album, You and
Me Against the World Baby, will be out later this year.
