CHIMES
OF FREEDOM
THE POLITICS OF BOB DYLAN’S ART
& CLUB POLITICO |
THURSDAY
APRIL 29
THE JOHN HEWITT 8.00PM
Bob Dylan’s lyrics are at once evocative, urgent and
timeless. But behind the anarchy and playfulness of Dylan’s
imagery lie meanings that are often highly charged with political
and social concerns.
In his brilliant study of Dylan’s work, ‘Chimes
of Freedom’, Mike Marqusee illuminates the forgotten
moral and political contexts of Dylan’s supernova years.
Marqusee’s talk is a brilliant exposition on the way
folk tradition, modernism and commercial popular culture are
sublimely fused in Dylan’s masterworks of the mid 60’s
such as Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde.
The author of the acclaimed study of Muhammad Ali ‘Redemption
Song, will give an entertaining, enlightening and impassioned
talk which is a journey through the sixties aimed at the challenges
of the future.
