Campbell was born in Yorkshire in 1957 and later graduated from
Cambridge where he had his first work published - articles on
sex in Forum magazine. He also busked around the world with
his bagpipes.
Joining the Mirror in 1982, he left in the mid 80s to work for
Eddy Shah’s Today but had a nervous breakdown and left
to return to the Mirror after convalescence becoming Political
Editor.
Asked by Tony Blair to be his press secretary when Blair became
leader of the Labour Party. Campbell played a key role helping
to create New Labour and return the Party to power.
Rising to become Labour’s Director of Communications and
Strategy, Campbell eventually resigned a few months ago, wanting
more of a life with his partner and their three children.
In his time in Downing St. Campbell has been involved in all
the major policy issues and international crises, not least
the war in Iraq and the events which gave rise to the recent
Hutton enquiry.
Campbell’s main hobbies are running, bagpipes and following
Burnley FC. Since resigning he has been spending his time making
speeches, writing, working for his charity.
