Alastair Campbell was born in Yorkshire in 1957 and later graduated from Cambridge where he had his first work published - articles on sex in Forum magazine. He also busked around the world with his bagpipes.

Joining the Mirror in 1982, he left in the mid 80s to work for Eddy Shah’s Today but had a nervous breakdown and left to return to the Mirror after convalescence becoming Political Editor.

Asked by Tony Blair to be his press secretary when Blair became leader of the Labour Party. Campbell played a key role helping to create New Labour and return the Party to power.

Rising to become Labour’s Director of Communications and Strategy, Campbell eventually resigned a few months ago, wanting more of a life with his partner and their three children.

In his time in Downing St. Campbell has been involved in all the major policy issues and international crises, not least the war in Iraq and the events which gave rise to the recent Hutton enquiry.

Campbell’s main hobbies are running, bagpipes and following Burnley FC. Since resigning he has been spending his time making speeches, writing, working for his charity.
