On Saturday May 5, the Belfast based music website Oh Yeah (www.ohyeah.net) will launch a special project in association with the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival.

The Van-tastic day is a series of events over the course of a day designed to celebrate the art of Van Morrison. In particular we aim to focus on his Belfast identity and his roots in East Belfast. The project will have five main components;

A bus tour of East Belfast. Leaving the centre of Belfast at noon, this tour will take in sites that find resonance in Van’s songs. The tour starts at the site of the old Maritime club then heads over to East Belfast to view various sites including Hyndford Street, Cyprus Avenue, the Connswater River. Orangefield Secondary School, St. Donards Church, the Old Castle Picture, the Brookborough Hall and Big Davy’s Chipper.

Music journalist Stuart Bailie will act as the tour guide, referencing the places and their significance in Van’s songwriting. The Bus leaves the John Hewitt Bar at 12.00pm. The tour will take approximately two and a half hours.

A virtual tour. For those who cannot make the visit to Belfast, there will be a virtual tour on the Oh Yeah website. A version of the tour exists online at www.ohyeah.net/special/vans_eastbelfast/index.html.
An enhanced version to coincide with the tour will feature film clips of the sites and related information.

A Van Morrison seminar. Entitled Van Morrison, Made in Belfast?, this event will start at 5.00pm at the Unemployed Resource Centre, Donegall St. The panel will comprise of Journalist Sean O’Hagan The Guardian, The Observer, Martin Lynch Playwright and Johnny Rogan music biographer of The Byrds, Morrissey and Neil Young

A photo exhibition. The well respected photographer Alistair Graham (New Musical Express, Hot Press) will be showing a series of landscape pictures, associated with the art of Van Morrison. This will be on show at the Unemployed Resource Centre during the seminar.
A musical celebration. A collection of musicians from Belfast, Dublin and beyond will play a selection of Van’s songs. Artists featured will include Nick Kelly, Susan Enan and Paul McMordie with many more to be included.
