Conor Hall, Art College 9.00pm
An impossible band to pigeonhole, Gorkys have been
likened to everyone from the Beach Boys to Captain Beafheart
and The Fall. They signed to Cardiffs Ankst Records
in 1993, releasing three fascinating albums, Patio (1993),
Tatay (1994) and Bwyd Time (1995). The band then signed
to Mercury Records for the release of Barafundle (1997)
and Gorky 5 (1998), at which point Mercury suddenly left
them in the lurch.
Free to do whatever they wanted, they recorded a new,
self-financed album (with regular cohort Gorwel Owen producing).
Perversely, this new collection of songs was their most
accessible and upbeat yet - by turns sad, romantic, melodic
and witty. The strength of these songs secured Gorkys
a new
deal with Mantra in 1999. The release of LPs Spanish Dance
Troupe (2000) and How I Long To Feel That Summer In My
Heart (2001) happily opened a new chapter in Gorkys
history - and the band are now able to follow their inspired,
idiosyncratic path with renewed confidence. March 2003
saw the release of 20, a compilation of all
the Eps and singles released between 1994-1996.
When the dust settles, Gorkys will be revealed as
one of the great British bands. The Sunday Times
Tickets £8.00 available from the Festival Office
on 028 9023 2403
