An impossible band to pigeonhole, Gorky’s have been likened to everyone from the Beach Boys to Captain Beafheart and The Fall. They signed to Cardiff’s Ankst Records in 1993, releasing three fascinating albums, Patio (1993), Tatay (1994) and Bwyd Time (1995). The band then signed to Mercury Records for the release of Barafundle (1997) and Gorky 5 (1998), at which point Mercury suddenly left them in the lurch.

Free to do whatever they wanted, they recorded a new, self-financed album (with regular cohort Gorwel Owen producing). Perversely, this new collection of songs was their most accessible and upbeat yet - by turns sad, romantic, melodic and witty. The strength of these songs secured Gorky’s a
new deal with Mantra in 1999. The release of LPs Spanish Dance Troupe (2000) and How I Long To Feel That Summer In My Heart (2001) happily opened a new chapter in Gorky’s history - and the band are now able to follow their inspired, idiosyncratic path with renewed confidence. March 2003 saw the release of “20”, a compilation of all the Eps and singles released between 1994-1996.

When the dust settles, Gorky’s will be revealed as one of the great British bands. The Sunday Times
