Landscapes, and particularly urban landscapes, are defined as much by sound as sight. The atmosphere in any city is as much a result of it’s sound, as it’s arcitecture. Traffic, weather, conversations, construction work, etc. All contribute a vital component to the landscape.

For two days, Exchange Place will be transformed , through sound, to become a gritty, urban soundscape of Manhattan.

Memory Cells Live score to film

Memory cells present a thematic series of primitive forlorn sketches - a melancholic rumination on memory and place, some of which was originally recorded to accompany an “Ambient film” entitled ‘No People Here’ and made by the group themselves. In its bleak, frozen beauty it could almost be Russian, bringing to mind the eternally lingering camerawork of director Andrei Tarkovsky, with whom they share an obsession with the occult power of secret spaces.

Memory Cell’s evocative marriage of melodic Enoesque drones and subtly stripped down ramshackle-blues, makes for one of the more challenging, yet ultimately rewarding, listening experiences around. In abandoning stereotypical musical arrangements, Memory Cells have passed the initial debut acid test with flying (dark) colours.

The Best of Avanto programme showcases an eclectic mix of pieces which fall under the broad category of “visual noise”.
