Over 30 years, wherever good music was played in Belfast, you'd bump into Geoff Harden as organiser, journalist or simply a fan. His genial, unassuming manner masked an encyclopaedic knowledge of music, across all genres.
Having started folk clubs in England and Scotland, Geoff became synonymous with the Sunflower Club, making Belfast a hub for folk music and hosting international and local acts like Ralph McTell, Andy Irvine, Barry Moore (Luka Bloom), Dick Gaughan and Paul Brady to name a few.
Geoff was the driving force behind the inaugural Belfast Folk Festival which he directed for 5 years and co-founded the Ulster Federation of Folk Clubs. Musicians from the worlds of folk, jazz, rock and pop all knew Geoff, as a true fan and constant supporter. Geoff cared more than anyone - about music, about art and about the people who made it, from grass-roots local level to the international stars.
Tonight, musicians, friends and fellow fans get the chance to say thank you to Geoff and to celebrate the memory of a true gentleman. This concert pays tribute to our departed friend and unsung hero.
