Born in New York City in 1926, JP Donleavy emigrated to Ireland following World War II. He is the author of eleven novels,probably the most famous of which is The Ginger Man first published 50 years ago this year.

He has published three works of nonfiction, The Unexpurgated Code: A Complete Manual of Survival & Manners; De Alphonse Tennis: The Superlative Game of Eccentric Champions, J.P.Donleavy’s Ireland: In All Her Sins and Some of Her Graces A Singular Country; and a collection of short stories, Meet My Maker the Mad Molecule. His autobiography, The History of the Ginger Man, appeared in 1994. He is now an Irish citizen and lives in Westmeath.
