Voices from the Grave: Clifton Street Cemetery and the United Irishmen
Clifton House, 2 North Queen St, Belfast, BT15 1ES
Thursday 21st January at 7pm
£7.00
Sold OutTo mark the 230th of the opening of the New Burying Ground on Clifton Street, Ken Dawson will be looking at some of the personalities within the Society of United Irishmen from its inception in 1791. While the names Drennan and McCracken are associated with the New Burying Ground, plots for other leading figures – Simms, Sinclaire, McCabe and Dickson – are also noteworthy. Also of interest is Thomas Whinnery, the postmaster of Belfast, who made himself familiar with contents of letters exchanged between leading radicals before passing information to the authorities. The talk will explore the connections between the cemetery and Belfast’s revolutionary past.
