Last Man in Europe is a fascinating portrayal of the man
who, in Nineteen Eighty-Four, gave the world Big Brother,
Room 101, and Doublethink; who wrote the beautiful, multi-layered
fable, Animal Farm and who used his rare talent for simple,
clear writing to bring public attention to social wrongs.
The play traces the journey of Orwells life, finding
the influences that turned the Eton schoolboy Eric Blair
into the socialist author George Orwell. Those influences
are in the friendships and reading matter of his childhood,
in his experiences as a policeman in Burma, on the streets
of Paris and London and in the mining communities of the
north.
The work is illustrated with scenes from several of Orwells
books, particularly his two major novels, Animal Farm
and Nineteen Eighty-Four
Immaculately researched and lovingly constructed,
McEvoys portrait of one of Britains most important
literary figures is a joy to watch. Fascinating.
Paul Rhodes, The Scotsman.
