What do you get if you cross the melancholy story-
telling of Lee Hazlewood, the lyricism of Leonard
Cohen and the raw thrust of country, blues and
folk? The answer is very likely Sons and Daughters.
The band have really hit a creative peak with their
third album, the Butler-produced The Gift. Dizzying
pop inflections augment their uncompromising
sound to create music that combines soaring
melodies and tarnished glamour.
Frightened Rabbit are a Scottish band who put a
lacklustre, bandwagon-jumping English indie scene
to shame. The Midnight Organ Fight is a tremulous,
trembling effort of stripped down guitars, shot
nerves, existential crisis and a sad, twisted heart.
The gentle, brittle My Backwards Walk was surely
one of the most devastating songs of 2008.
Twisted, tortured and terrific.
The Lowly Knights are surely one of the most
talked about bands of 2009. This twelve member
ensemble stand apart with a sound that stretches
from fragile whispers to grand folk opera.
