  Tea Dance
  The Black Box
Thursday 3 May 2.00pm

Waltz Around the Tea Table in an afternoon tea-dance and more. For the Victorians, the afternoon tea party was an absolute crucial part of social life. Hostesses often arranged for a little light entertainment to brighten the event - a piano recital, a poetry reading, a performance by an opera singer, or card playing and gambling. And in the 1880s, 'dancing on the carpet' became the latest tea-time trend. Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival will re create the warmth and the glamour of the afternoon teadance. Dance the afternoon away with live music from Blue Jar, presenter of the 'The Wireless Set' on U105 John O'Hara will play music from the 30s and 40s and be inspired by our seasoned dance champions Tom and Sally Robinson who have a partnership spanning sixty years and last year appeared on the BBC's Dance Floor Dreams.

Parties can sit and enjoy a most excellent tea, thanks to Nambarrie between dances, play cards or simply sit back and relax.

'What a happy innovation on such an afternoon would be the 'tea-dance'! Men usually fight shy of the ladies' tea-hour, but few of them can resist the pleasure of a waltz or a Boston; so try the tea-dance idea...! '
