Rawlife, the Company that brought you last year’s hugely successful Psycho Beach Party and A Clockwork Orange, present another classic of modern subculture: Ken Kesey’s 1962 novel, One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, directed by Martin McSharry.
R.P. McMurphy (Lalor Roddy) finds himself in jail once again on a charge of statutory rape. He convinces the authorities that he's in need of psychiatric care and is sent to a mental hospital. Here McMurphy’s insubordination and zest for life soon stimulates the rest of the patients into rebellion. However the weight of his obligation to the other patients, his fear for his own life and the presence of the tyrannical Nurse Ratched (Alexandra Ford), begin to wear down his strength and sanity. Forget the movie; Rawlife’s play written by Dale Wasserman complete with straight-jackets, drugs, prostitutes and electroshock therapy. You are in the sterile, paranoid and humorous yet life affirming world of McMurphy and his band of unlikely rebels.
Rawlife explore the themes of individuality and rebellion against conformity, ideas that were widely discussed in the 60’s at a time when the USA was undermining opposing regimes around the world ... sound familiar?
The Potthouse Bar & Grill is open before and after each performance, so why not book a pre/post show meal and make a night of it?
