The Myth Dir: Simon Safranek, Czech Republic, 2003, 61 mins With: Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Blixa Bargeld The John Hewitt Sunday 30 April, 2.00pm

Obsessive, dark, brooding and compelling have undoubtedly all been employed as adjectives to describe the music and the persona of Nick Cave. The dark undercurrent runs throughout this melancholy minstrel’s 20some albums and evokes strong response from his legion of dedicated followers making Cave among contemporary music’s leading cult heroes.

The Czech filmmakers here explore the realm of cult celebrity and fandom through this riveting and occasionally disconcerting piece. The dedication and devotion of some of Cave’s fans surpass all senses of normalcy—it is at once touching and creepy, and constantly fascinating. The filmmakers travel to several European shows to talk to fans, and interview Cave himself about the perks and pitfalls of his unique brand of fame. What results is a fascinating sociological study of the cathartic and sometimes crazy milieu of rock semistardom.

Simon Safranek works in a variety of mediums including film, photography and poetry.
