Square becomes Red Square tonight (May Day) as songs of struggle,
resistance (and love) take centre stage. Simply one of the
greatest folk singers of this and any other age, Gaughan’s
guitar playing is innovative, sensitive, expressive ,beautiful;
his voice is by turns tender, angry, passionate, lamenting.
The scope of emotion between songs like World Turned Upside
Down and Now Westlin Winds is breathtakingly large. This is
what music is all about: the honesty and transparency of an
artist’s heart, masterful technique, and a total faithfulness
to the spirit of tradition.
Are we sounding a little superlative here? Look, here’s the
bottom line: if you have ANY LIKING for traditional or acoustic
music, you simply MUST attend this gig.
