Bridget Byrne took a ferry to London to have an abortion
but gave birth to a baby boy instead.
Austin (Occi) Byrne thinks differently to the other boys
- he’s sure it’s from an accident he had as
a child, but maybe it’s for another reason.
Swansong is a sinister yet humorous story. Frowned on by
the church, isolated by relatives, Occi and Bridget struggle
to survive in a tough garrison town. Occi grows to adulthood
in a dog-eat-dog world on a journey that takes him through
murder and mayhem, love and death, returning ultimately
to the beginning: a lost soul looking for recognition and
a place to belong.
A stunning performance by Conor McDermottroe saw this hailed
as one of the must see plays of the Edinburgh Festival ‘04
