One-time friends. Lifetime enemies. Locked together forever in the pages of Ulysses.
James Joyce and Oliver St John Gogarty were close
friends in the year leading up to Joyce’s self-
imposed exile in 1904. The friendship, always
strained by competitiveness, disintegrated into
long-term enmity after a celebrated falling out in
the Martello Tower and formed the backdrop to the
opening chapter of Joyce’s masterpiece Ulysses.
One went on to international recognition as a 20th
century literary icon; the other used his literary
talents only fitfully and found himself remembered
mainly as plump Buck Mulligan to Joyce’s sensitive
Stephen Dedalus.
The Tower brings them back to Sandycove again in
the present day, to recreate their relationship with
humour and insight - and more than a century of
hindsight - as they look back on their friendship,
their art, and their lives.
Starring Tom Hickey as James Joyce and Bosco
Hogan as Oliver St John Gogarty. Directed by
Caroline FitzGerald.
