A community is more than bricks and mortar alone. This is a small story about one community in Hoxton, in London and the demolition of their block of flats. It sheds light on the impermanence of that which we take for granted, the fabric of our daily lives and the community around us. While it is about change, it is not about the loss of what once was, but an appreciation of what is now.

The block of flats, Longbow House, was demolished in March 2003 as part of the redevelopment of Hoxton. Michael Donald photographed the residents over a 3 year period up to and including the demolition. The residents were re-housed locally in newly built houses. The photographs have been exhibited at The National Portrait Gallery, The Museum of London, in New York and on the estate itself.

Michael has kept in touch with the residents who periodically call him to photograph weddings, Holy Communions, and 70th birthdays.

The project has won a John Kobal Photographic Portrait Award and an International Photography Award.
