Manhattan, 1928, the lobby of a small, second-rate hotel, in the late, late hours of a very long night. Erie Smith returns after a five-day bender, all faded glamour and unsubstantiated, maudlin boasting. Six days ago he attended the funeral of the hotel's night clerk, Hughie. In a mood to ramble, he's left with no-one to talk to but the new night clerk Charlie Hughes, no relation. The Arches Theatre Company takes on a little-known play by one of twentieth century America's best dramatists. Hughie was Eugene O'Neill's last one-act play; a brilliantly sharp and witty piece of writing which focuses on charismatic compulsive gambler Erie Smith.
Part intense character study, part tender in memorium, Hughie has been performed by actors as diverse as Jason Robards and Al Pacino. OMAC are delighted to be able to stage this wonderful play's Irish premiere.
