  SYMPOSIUM: RELICS OF PERFORMANCE

Friday April 29 | Belfast Exposed, Exchange Place | 10.30-5.00pm

How are we to read and interpret objects often presented as artworks, when they are at the same time also treated as ‘relics’ or documentary evidence of a specific performance or intervention by an artist? The origin and category of art in terms of object has been problematised in the work of artists such as Joseph Beuys, Rebecca Horn and Alistair MacLennan (above).

Their performance/interventionist practice has been impinging on curatorial positions and the significance of documentation in relation to the temporal art event and status of the object.

The distinction between event, documentation, artwork and their readings need to be re-thought. What are the consequences for the re-presentation of an art event, for the construction of cultural histories, for the formation of collective memory, and for the role of audience and art mediator? The symposium brings together speakers from a multidisciplinary field to address these pertinent and timely questions.

Presented by Interface: Centre for Research in Art, Technologies and Design, School of Art and Design, University of Ulster, in collaboration with Dr. Nichola Foster, Open University and Suffolk College, and in association with Belfast Exposed.
