Bernard MacLaverty was born in Belfast in 1942 where he lived until 1975 when he moved to Scotland with his wife and family. He has been a Medical Laboratory Technician, a mature student, a teacher of English and, for two years in the mid eighties, Writer-in-Residence at the University of Aberdeen.

After living for a time in Edinburgh and the Isle of Islay he now lives in Glasgow. He has been a Guest Writer for short periods at the University of Augsburg and at Iowa State University. He is a member of Aosdana in Ireland.

He has published four collections of short stories and four novels - the latest of which, The Anatomy School, was published in August 2001. He has written versions of his fiction for other media – radio plays, television plays and screenplays. Over the years his work haswon many awards and prizes. Grace Notes was awarded The Saltire Scottish Book of the Year Award (1997) and was short-listed for The Booker Prize.

Bernard will read from his forthcoming collection of short stories Matters of Life & Death to be published in May 2006.
