Like CQAF, Canadian superstars Arcade Fire have
built a reputation on some incendiary live shows,
so this documentary of their last tour makes
perfect sense.
Artfully shot in black and white, this is no
ordinary “rockumentary” however. Clichéd stock
footage is traded in for the unexpected, the
lateral rather than the linear. For example, the
lyrics to “Intervention” are spelled out on screen
so viewers can sing along. In another deviation
from convention, the band members are shot
during one of their meditation sessions.
But ultimately, this is a document of one of the
most thrillingly original bands of the age doing
what they do best. The live power of material
such as Rebellion (Lies) and Neighborhood #3
(Power Out) is undeniable and make this film
essential viewing.
