My Bass and other Animals

Guy Pratt is a bass guitarist and song writer who has worked with some of the biggest names in rock and pop. He replaced Roger Waters in Pink Floyd and has worked with Michael Jackson, Madonna and Bryan Ferry. He was even in The Smiths for a week.

He has won a Grammy and been nominated for two Ivor Novello Awards, as well as co-writing the hit Vindaloo with Fat Les. More recently he has spent the last few years writing and producing television and film scores for the likes of Spaced (Channel 4), Young Persons Guide To Becoming A Rock Star, Linda Green and Jimmy Nail's Crocodile Shoes.

My Bass and Other Animals tells the story of a fascinating career as a bass player, a career that involved working with some of the worlds top performers as well as playing groundbreaking shows in Venice and Moscow.

Guy has played bass professionally for over 15 years and the show gives an intriguing insight into the music industry and behind the scenes of touring.

Think Badly Drawn Boy without the annoying bumbling bits, think Mull Historical Society with a better voice, think Teenage Fanclub played by a one man band and you are getting somewhere close to an adequate idea of the sound of Duke Special.

Essentially one chap, Peter Wilson, the Duke has succeeded in creating something that sounds both new *and* old-fashioned in the space of forty-five minutes. His critically acclaimed new album Adventures in Gramaphone has the kind of harmonies for which Brian Wilson would give his sanity, or failing that, his right arm.

At a time when most singer-songwriters appear to be stuck in the David Gray or Damien Rice mould, it's a relief to discover that someone still has some musical signs of life. Few artists emerge with a sound they can honestly claim is theirs and theirs alone, but Duke Special produces music that, at times, sounds like nothing that has gone before it.
