The Bard of Salford, whose poems have provided the opening soundtrack for some of the biggest bands in the world will be weaving his lyrical magic in this special festival performance.

John Cooper Clarke shot to prominence in the 1970s as the original punk poet whose sparse, rapid-fire prose defined the experiences of the working classes on the streets of the UK’s big cities and he became known as one of the leading voices of youth culture.

In his early years John made his name performing to small crowds in the pubs and clubs of Manchester before appearing on the same bill as bands such as The Sex Pistols, Joy Division and Elvis Costello.

The vitality of John’s work has seen its inclusion in a variety of different media. Bands such as Arctic Monkeys and Reverend and the Makers cite him as a major influence on their work and his poem, Evidently Chickentown featured in an episode of US TV gangster drama The Sopranos.
